Meet the exotically beautiful Angelique Noire. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she is an alluring mix of African, Filipino, Native American and Caucasian descent. Standing at 5’10, Angelique’s measurements are 34B-25-35. Although she’s modeled in the Advertising and Catalogue industry, Angelique has found that there is little diversity amongst Pinups…she’s right! Making big waves in the industry as the first black Modern day Pin up girl, let’s welcome the lovely Angelique Noire into this month’s Model Spotlight!

Get to know Angelique Noire!
A PinupDirectory exclusive!
Current project I’m working on…
Modeling is an ongoing project that consists of working for a variety of diverse clientele. I list many of the clients I’ve worked for up until this point on my website, The Pinup Noire. Right now I’m working on the success and media visibility of “Angelique Noire”, the first Black Pin Up of the 21st century. I create, edit, and display videos that show hair styling tutorials, homemade beauty secret recipes, and more. You’ll also find interviews that I do as a correspondent for Pin Up America on The PinUp Noire’s YouTube Channel, which was mainly created as an outlet to address questions I’m constantly asked on beauty and more. Though I’ve done a few pinup style photo shoots in the past, in July 2011 I embraced my pinup girl journey, (outside of regular modeling gigs), due to the passion that I have for 1940s/1950s Old Hollywood Glamour and Pin Up photographs. In this day and age, it’s amazing how rare it is to find classy photographs of black women in 1940s/50s style pin up photos. It’s also encouraging to hear compliments and comments from every race, gender, and age generally saying something to the effect of, “FINALLY! A Black Pin Up!” I also have goals of creating my own cosmetics line, acting in movies, and more. The sky’s the limit, and I’m eager to see what all unfolds as a result of my endeavors.

Favorite photographers I’ve worked with…Matthew Rolston, Laura Byrnes, Charles Bush, Kenneth Willardt, Peter Arnell, and James White.

Pin Up models I admire, past or present…Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Rita HayworthBetty Grable, and Bettie Page are my favorite pin ups of the past. My favorite modern day pin up that exudes the Glamour of the 1940s/50s is Dita Von Teese.

Aside from Pinup what other genres do you specialize in?I mainly model for catalogs, advertisements, and commercials for department stores and many different products. Generally, pretty wholesome stuff. I’m also a runway model.

My fantasy photo shoot would involve…LOTS OF COLORS and shiny skin! I envision a David LaChapelle type shoot with a cross between artist Olivia De Berardinis pinup drawings. I imagine being a super sexy chocolate colored mermaid with an iridescent gold and Swarovski crystallized tail; a diamond clam shell-like bustier top; waist length hair with Bettie Page bangs, adorned with a thin diamond studded crown; and floating in an underwater ocean scene in front of my clam shell throne!!! That would make a cool Evian water ad wouldn’t it?!  I have soooo many more photo shoot fantasies that I hope to turn into reality.

Fun facts:I laugh and smile A LOT. I love to dance Salsa, Merengue, Samba, Flamenco, Tango, Hip Hop, and more. I’m a pretty good follower, so if I have a great leader I can do many other partnered dance styles too. It’s not easy to find a good dance partner though, because with heels I’m over 6 ft tall.

Things people would be surprised to learn about me…I have two kids that aren’t toddlers. I don’t work out on a regular basis, nor do I drink alcohol (simply because I don’t like the taste of it), and I don’t care to speak profane language.

Favorite drink(s)?Fruit smoothies…pretty much any combination of fruits.

Most embarrassing moment…Too many funny moments that could qualify as embarrassing to others. But I don’t have a problem with laughing at myself, so I don’t qualify them as too embarrassing. One of my favorites was when I was going to a casting wearing a wig. It had the same texture as my natural hair when it’s curly (my hair was straightened underneath). I didn’t pin it on, so as I crossed the street a strong wind blew hard enough to cause my wig to fall off. It rolled like a tumbleweed in the crosswalk. I chased after it, all while wearing a short dress and heels. I picked it up, shook it off, kept on stepping, and laughed along with everyone else who were laughing from inside their cars.

Favorite foods to nosh on…Basically food is my friend, but burritos and cheese quesadillas are my favorites.

I unwind by…I love to play Words with Friends while listening to jazz infused music.

I find the following most annoying…Greedy, selfish, and/or overly critical individuals.

Favorite time of day is…(and why)…I’m a morning person. It’s very rare for me to stay asleep past 7am. I’m usually up before the sun rises. I enjoy the quiet time, which sometimes gets interrupted by my son, who also gets up before the crack of dawn (to play his favorite video game until it’s time to get ready for school).

I enjoy or absolutely love…Aside from God, my kids and the man in my life…I absolutely love music, dancing, modeling, and eating foods that too often have little or no nutritional value.

Guilty pleasure(s)…Surfing the internet…I can waste far too many hours looking at nothing related to what I have to accomplish in the day.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would you be and what would you be doing?I would be modeling and living in between Paris, Cannes, and Los Angeles, fulfilling my goals of producing my own cosmetics line, acting in movies, and more.

If you could have lunch with anyone who is famous who would it be?Jesus Christ…man, do I want to pick his brain!

What would you like to say to your fans?I want to thank everyone for opening their minds and appreciating/supporting a pin up girl that is different from the typical pin-up image. There’s beauty in diversity.

Angelique is a sure fire beauty destined to reach her goals within the Pin-up industry and more! You can find more of her photos at

Hair Talk With Angelique Noire

Firstly introduce yourself.Where are you from and what do you do?
Hello my name is Angelique Noire. I am from Los Angeles, CA and am a professional model, you can view some of my work on my website www.thepinupnoire.comHow long have you been natural? I say about a total of 10 years, with a relaxer interruption in between. I had initially stopped putting relaxers in my hair when I  was pregnant with my first child. Several years passed, when I had to relax my hair for a modelling job that required my having to have relaxer applied, being that it was for a relaxer box.The client wanted girls with different hair lengths. I was told they thought I could pull off the shorter hair look because they couldn't photograph two girls for the shoulder length hair spot. As a result, I was the sacrificial lamb :) Not too long afterwards, I chopped off all my hair again to start over. It wasn't much of a sacrifice being that a considerable amount was already wacked off for the job.
How did you transition, did you big chop?
I chopped my hair off both times that I had decided to go au naturalWhat were the main reasons for your choice to wear your natural hair? I just like to feel my hair and scalp :) I use to wear weaves for many years, but for whatever reason I liked touching the new growth. So over 10 years ago, I just decided to never do a weave again. I love the freedom not having to work my hair styles according to how my hair was weaved, but instead enjoy doing whatever style I feel...with/without ADD ON hair options :) I do wear wigs pretty often for certain types of castings and because of the many hair horror stories I've experienced on jobs. I utilize wigs because my hair stays protected; the lengths are interchangeable; clients like my hair options; and if a hairstylist puts various products and heating agents that damage the wig, I can just replace it :)

What are your earliest hair memories? How did these memories influence your hair journey today?
My earliest hair memories are of my mom taking a whole Saturday to braid and bead the hair of my sister and I. I hated how long it took, but she didn't have to comb our hair for about 2 weeks.  Other times I remember sitting on the pillow in front of my mom's chair by the stove, as she would press my hair straight. I endured sitting still and resisted flinching even when I had been burned by the pressing comb, because I wanted my hair straight. Of course, the scarf that would typically stay on better when my hair was braided, always managed to escape my head in the middle of the night when it was pressed straight.I look back and see how my hair journey has influenced how I embrace the natural texture of my children's hair. I rarely press my daughter's hair straight, because I love how thick and kinky it is. Not fun to detangle, but it's very beautiful. I tell her constantly to never have her hair relaxed because her hair is beautiful like it is. My son loves his curly fro too. He has admired some of the pictures I have shown him of several of my male cousins who have hair to the middle of their backs. My boyfriend's hair (which is naturally straight) is past his shoulders, and my son keeps referring to how he want his hair to be long like his. What does having naturalhair mean to you?I know that our skin is a huge organ that absorbs what we put on it. Naturally, the thought of the harsh chemicals that are found in hair relaxers, being absorbed into my scalp, kinda disturbs me. Also there is a freedom I enjoy with natural hair. Freedom from chemical burns; freedom from spending hours in a hair salon to get my hair retouched; freedom from spending hours of pressing my hair straight; the freedom to wash and go; and the freedom to be admired by those who appreciate my natural hair.

How do you keep your hair looking so good?

I typically wash my hair once a week with baking soda and rinse with apple cider vinegar. After I detangle with my fingers, I then comb through sections with a wide tooth comb. Depending on how I have to wear my hair during the week for work, I usually moisturize my hair with olive oil and then two strand twist my hair while it air dries, or cornrow it if I will have to wear a wig.

What products do you use in your hair?
Baking soda, organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and organic extra virgin olive oil are my favorite products that I use on my hair and skin.

What are your go to hair style?
I have posted some Youtube how to hairstyle tutorials,These videos show a few natural hair styles I like to do. I love 1940s and 50s hairstyles. I get a lot of creative inspiration from this era to do my hair styles for curly hair. I love the look of locs and some braiding styles on other people, but it's not very convenient for me. Instead I enjoy styles that are easy to do, yet have a unique twist. I am always complimented on how the 1940s and 50s style suits me the most.

How do you protect your hair in the winter months?
During the winter it is really easy to not drink as much water in comparison to the summer months, so I make it a point to drink enough water to keep my hair and skin hydrated. I do hot oil treatments weekly as opposed to every other week too.

Do you have any advice for women starting out on there natural journey?
Natural hair care takes PATIENCE. Developing great grooming habits, coupled with patience needed to maintain it, will produce a beautiful head of natural hair!

Our Doll On Display For The Month Of November: Angelique Noire

NOVEMBER 8, 2011
Dolls on Display  Angelique Noire is a classic beauty who captivates with her flawless skin and her brilliant smile. Her style is sexy and feminine with a hint of sass. She is making waves in the fashion world as a pin-up model and shows no signs of slowing down. The Dolls had the pleasure of speaking with Angelique and are pleased to share what they learned from her! Read on to find out more about this gorgeous model!

1. Where do you reside and what do you do?
I live in Los Angeles, CA. I am a professional model that has worked for numerous clients in the fashion/beauty industy.  Some of my clients are listed on my website at http://www.thepinupnoire.com/about-angelique.html

2. What was your family’s reaction to you going natural?
When I decided to have a second go at going natural, the only person that was shocked was my ex husband (he was my husband at the time).  I was pregnant with my second child, woke up one day, and shaved my hair all off with his electric shaver.  I woke him up that morning, and asked him to get the back of my head for me

3. What is one hair product that you can’t do without?

Baking Soda.  I wash my hair with it and use it for my skin too.

4. Do you have any hair wisdom you’d like to share with other natural beauties?
I try to stay away from products that are filled with chemicals such as sulfates,  alcohols, petroleum based oils- like mineral oil & petrolatum, and more. The reasons being that many of these unnatural ingredients tend to strip the hair of it’s natural oils and dry out the hair; clog hair follicles which prevent healthy hair growth; and are not healthy when absorbed by the skin. Take into account that this answer I explained is the over simplified version of reasons to avoid these ingredients in hair products. In essence, I prefer products with natural ingredients.I also want to stress the importance of getting regular trims. I’ve made a commitment to trim mine ever 8-10 weeks. I have on several occasions had to chop off many inches of damaged hair because I was being lazy about getting rid of these split ends.  I jeopardized having close to an extra 10-12 inches of healthy hair, because I chose to hold onto those bad ends far too long throughout my hair growth journey.

5. What is your original hair care regimen?
I first wash my hair with a baking soda and water mixture.  I then rinse with unfiltered organic apple cider mix. I have a Youtube Video that shows how I do it on http://youtube.com/thepinupnoire .  I typically moisturize my hair with extra virgin olive oil, but I also like organic coconut oil, unrefined shea butter, jojoba oil, or castor oil. It all depends on how I feel like styling my hair and the weather.

6.What made you decide to go natural?
I decided to embrace my naturally textured hair as a result of my two pregnancies.  It’s recommended to not relax or dye your hair while pregnant, so I easily had no problem leaving it alone. After becoming pregnant with my first child, I stopped relaxing my hair. It grew past my shoulders a little over 2 years. My hair felt much more healthier and thicker in comparison to when I was having my hair relaxed.

Even though I enjoyed being relaxer free, I had to agree to get my hair relaxed and cut in order to do a modeling job for a hair relaxing product. As a result, my efforts of growing my hair without using relaxers had to be done all over again. Months after I completed that print job, I found out I was pregnant with my second child, and chopped all my hair off again, and haven’t had a relaxer since.

7. Who do you look up to for hair inspiration, if anyone?

I don’t really look up to any”one” in particular for hair inspiration. I adore the 1940s-1950s Old Hollywood/ PinUp girl photos and movies, so I try to replicate these hairdos with my kinky hair to put a more unique twist on these classic hairstyles. As much as I love my kinky textured hair, I can’t do a lot of the hairstyles I love, so I do resort to pressing my hair straight and/or using wigs and hairpieces.  I like variety.  Just like I don’t wear the same clothes or fashion look everyday, I don’t wear my hair the same. In order to keep my hair healthy, I try as much as possible to wear protective styles or leave it cornrowed under my wigs for my jobs/castings.

8. Have you found the fashion/entartainment world to be more or less accepting of your natural hair?
The word “natural” can posses several meanings in this instance. “Natural”ly kinky/curly hairstyles still have a long way to go to become the norm on the red carpet, in high fashion magazines, and entertainment media…I guess the main step is to see more high profile media outlets with a higher percentage of people of color (of African decent, Black folks, African Americans, whatever term floats your boat). Because the media has such a huge influence on the standards of beauty and fashion, the small percentage of women/men of color that are invited or photographed at these highly publicized events, or for high fashion magazines give a limited source of inspiration for individuals with kinky/curly textured hair to emulate. The images that are more readily available are the women of color with with human hair extension that are non kinky/curly textured hairstyles.  Being that there are a plethora of hairstylist that are hired for these high fashion magazines, fashion shows, etc. that lack the skills to maintain or style naturally kinky/ curly textured hair, it is understandable why women of color (including me) resort to using add-on tresses. I have had several hair dramas that have happened on jobs where the hairstylist acted like they knew what they were doing and ended up having me look half crazy because they decided to experiment on my head during a job.My whole job is based on how my client wants me to look for their product. The television commercial market is more accepting of the kinky/curly hair texture. Other than that, if it takes human hair wigs and hairpieces to achieve the look they want to see, then that’s what they will get. Therefore, “natural” can also mean without extensions/hair pieces, or with human hairpieces that look believable. In essence, clients are extremely accepting of the fact that I have lots of hairstyle options. The straightened long hair look is the typical “safe” look they typically choose to use. I guess you can kinda compare it as being the “little black dress” that fits most situations without much effort. Clients do like my hair texture, but they usually ask how long will it take to straighten it because they will more than likely want this option done the same day. In essence, it is my job to be a chameleon.

9. Are there any devloping projects that we can look forward to seeing from you?
I never know when my photos, commercials, advertisements that I have done for various clients end up being available to view until family or friends end up telling me before I see them myself. Some of my work can be found on my website at
http://www.thepinupnoire.com . I also plan on posting more video tutorials, skin/haircare regimen, and interviews that I do for Pinup America on my Youtube channel @ http://www.youtube.com/thepinupnoire . Other places to see some of my work are also on my Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter accounts- all of which are found though my website too  xoxo

Angelique // Natural Hair Style IconStyle Icon inShare*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally

Introduce yourself!
A:
My name is Angelique. I live in Los Angeles, California and I’m a professional model.

Why did you make the decision to go natural?
A:
I was tired of feeling as though relaxers were weakening my hair. When I was wearing relaxers many years ago I always found myself loving to feel the curly new growth, but continued relaxing for some time until I decided to go natural. My hair grew very fast and felt healthier when I made “the chop” for the first time.

When and how did you transition into natural hair?
A:
I initially made the first chop of all my hair when I was pregnant with my first child to avoid putting those chemicals into my system, and I let it grow for a few years. Because of modeling, I would go on castings for hair products, but many times the client would want me to relax my hair and I would refuse. When I finally broke down and decided to give a client the option to relax my hair, I was chosen to be photographed for a popular hair relaxer box. I knew I was going to have to start all over again, but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make. Afterwards, I cut my hair all off again when the new growth was about a few inches and have not used a relaxer since. It was an easy transition because I was pregnant with my second child, and had already experienced the process of “going natural”. Being that I would wear wigs for work, my clients and agents didn’t notice any difference.

In what ways (if any) has going natural affected you?
A:
Being a model, you don’t always know what is going to be done to your hair that day for a job. Most of the time, hairstylists are more about getting your hair styled the way they want regardless of how much damage is being done with heat, teasing, spraying, gelling, etc. When I wear my hair with its natural texture, they rarely do much to it…which I definitely appreciate. But a lot of times I don’t use my natural texture because clients like to have straight options. Depending on the job, I usually cornrow my hair and use straight wigs of various lengths. It saves a lot of time and effort, plus they can do whatever crap they want to my wigs because they are replaceable. If I didn’t use wigs for my jobs and just straightened my own hair…let’s just say I would look like a cat scratched through and ravaged my hair. I would not be getting much work with two strands of hair on my head, ya know ;)

How would you describe your hair?
A:
I like to say sometimes that my hair is confused. In the front it’s more wavy and straighter because that is what is exposed when I am wearing wigs. I guess you can really say that it’s the more damaged part of my hair. Other parts are a looser curl than the majority of my hair. The rest is very coiled after being washed…kinda resembling the spring in a clickable pen because it’s protected more often.

What is your regimen?
A:
I wash my hair with a baking soda and water mixture. Then I use an unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar and water mixture to rinse. Sometimes I use a natural leave in conditioner like Kinky Curly’s Knot Today. I posted a YouTube video about the baking soda and apple cider vinegar regimen —>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZNA86eFMEY

How do you retain length and moisture in your hair?
A:
I typically cornrow my hair under the wigs I wear for work. When I choose to expose my own hair on days I am not working I try as much to do protective styling with a pinup/1940s/1950s flair. These styles are simplest for me because I can’t commit to locking my hair or doing intricate braid patterns…though I really want to lock my hair. I moisturize my hair with a combination of things including olive oil, jojoba oil, unrefined shea butter, glycerin…it all depends on what I will be doing that day, or whichever of these is in reaching distance in my bathroom.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
A:
I have learned to read the labels of hair products. Just because something says “all natural” doesn’t necessarily mean it is free of all sorts of chemicals. I refuse to use anything with sulfates because they are so drying for the scalp and hair. I also don’t use products with mineral oil because it clogs pores and hair follicles. Those two are the main things I avoid like the plague, but there are many other chemicals in hair products that are not only bad for your hair, but also your health.

What’s the best/most effective thing you do for your hair?
A:
Take vitamins, drink lots of water, and moisturize. All three are an important combination for healthy hair.

Is there a blog/webpage where we can find you?

That Angelic Being Angelique Noire

by Cary

Classic pinup has become a huge phenomena lately, what about it first captured your interest?
Since a young girl I began collecting Alberto Vargas pictures that I admired. I also loved watching movies with Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, Jane Mansfield, and more. These women looked so glamorous, classy, feminine, with a sexiness that was obvious but not gaudily overstated. I found these images to be examples of what I envisioned myself being able to imitate when I was old enough to do so.

What do you think about pinup becoming part of the mainstream culture?
I don't think this look has ever left because it is timeless. Since the times when it was at the height of it's popularity, women continue to revisit this style at various points in their fashion journey. Gwen Stefani, Dita Von Teese, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and many more entertainers are putting their own twist on this classic look, and making it more visible, but I highly doubt there will be a time when ultra sexy, feminine, classic beauty will ever vanish from mainstream.

What is it that excites you about pinup modeling?
I kinda feel like I am the first Black modern day pinup :) Being that I have yet to see a chocolate color woman packaged in the 1940s/50s pinup style, I feel like I am able to put my mark on this undeveloped territory. Though I have been a professional model working for various clients doing clothing catalogues, commercials, print advertisements, runway shows, etc, I rarely booked jobs that presented me in the pinup style. As a result, I birthed the Angelique Noire persona on July 14, 2011 to indulge my passion for recreating this retro look for photos, videos, and even for my walks to the grocery store :) I am overwhelmed by the positive responses that I have received as a result!

Are there any other creative mediums you work in?
As a means of saving money (or being cheap), I have developed my skills in digital editing, video editing, and photography. I am very much into doing arts and crafts. I paint, make hair accessories, dabble in sewing outfits, restore/redecorate vintage hats, glue Swarovski crystals on as many things as possible, and more! I have too many hobbies, and ideas to keep myself occupied that I could never find myself bored.

What are your favorite types of outfits to model in?
Colorful wiggle dresses and lingerie. I LOVE bright colors and pastel hues against my skin tone.

What are your least favorites?
I am not a fan of thongs. I'll wear them, but not happy to be in them. I'd rather go panty-less than wear those annoying booty slings.

What kind of music do you like?
It depends on my mood. Most of the time I like music with adown tempo, jazz, lounge vibe such as Wax Tailor, Billie Holiday, Bebel Gilberto, and Edith Piaf playing while I'm doing things throughout the day. If I want something with an up tempo to dance to, I listen to samba, salsa, meringue, and hip hop. If I feel like singing (at least pretending that I can), I listen to Gospel and R&B. If I am feeling like something a little more exotic I listen to east Indian music.

What do you like to do for fun?
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE!!!!I am also ADDICTED to Words With Friends!!!!!!!!!!!I use to play Scrabble a lot against my computer, but just a few months ago discovered that I can play against my Facebook and Twitter friends. I've been hooked ever since. My username is Modelnoire by the way...challenge me if you dare! Muah ah ah ah aaaah (wicked laugh)
